1922 Peace Dollar

$1,922.00

Designed by Anthony de Francisci, the Peace dollar was minted from 1921 to 1928. This coin’s obverse represents the Goddess Libertas and, to instill confidence following World War I, its reverse depicts a bald eagle clutching an olive branch. Inscriptions include “Peace” in a legend below, E Pluribus Unum, “Liberty”, and period letters rendering “TRVST” from “In God We Trust.”

Controversies surrounding the worth of this 1922 coin revolve around whether or not the design is high-relief and if any of its 35,401 “business strikes” survived. This was the last U.S. dollar coin to be struck for circulation in silver. With many worth several hundred thousand, the highest price paid for a 1922 Peace Dollar may have been $458,250 in 2014.

This is a rare 1922 90%-silver coin sold in Mint State Choice (MS-67) condition!

A third ray of light extending over the eagle’s wing can be seen at the top of the “N” in “ONE” on this coin, indicating a high strike. Bearing no mint mark, it was struck in Philadelphia. 1921 high-relief coins were first made on December 28 and weren’t released into circulation until January 3, 1922; there wasn’t time to finalize low-relief sculpting needed to keep 1921 high-relief dies from breaking. Although no proof coins were made, it’s likely this exact coin was struck to prove modified 1921 dies after they were decommissioned on January 10 and with-held from use at the Denver and San Francisco mints. This 1922 Peace Dollar isn’t a matte proof.
